Lyft driver Naomi Birabwa of Framingham shares why she backs a proposed ballot question that would give her and her fellow drivers new benefits while protecting their independence:
Becoming a driver with Lyft has been life changing. Not only am I my own boss, but I also get to help my community at the same time….
Keeping my flexibility as an independent contractor is vital to ensuring drivers who rely on these platforms for additional income can maintain our lifestyles. This proposed ballot question would allow drivers to remain independent contractors while receiving new benefits and protections such as guaranteed earnings, paid sick time, paid family and medical leave. This offers a middle-ground solution for app-based workers, and I hope Massachusetts voters will support drivers like me in our efforts to remain independent while receiving new benefits.
